Here I’m in the garage, looking thru old things and suddenly I see a very old friend. Is one of those friends that stay with you, waiting patiently the moment to be useful. This friend went with me to my first Cake Decorating Class, 27 years ago. The one that helped me so much when I started teaching Cake Decorating at Miami Palmetto High School. With me, while teaching at Miami Dade College Culinary School at Kendall and Wolfson campuses. Always at hand, when I opened Marivi’s Sugarcraft Boutique.
World is changing constantly, new technology bring more new and powerful gadgets that in some way make our life easier. That is why my hand held Kitchen-Aid mixer, my loyal friend, ended in a corner of my kitchen. When we moved to Ocala, it moved to a box with a bunch of other stuff.
Coincidentally when I lifted the mixer from the box, an old telephone notebook jumped to call my attention. Names after names, friends, memories, my head was like a spinning wheel remembering faces, happiness and sorrows, everything mixed up at the same time.
Cake Decorating has been my passion for many, many years. Is creative, fulfilling and always bringing happiness to the maker and the person that receive. Cake decorating is time consuming. Every petal of each flower, every leaf, line, design, color, baking, ingredients, bases, details and delivery, transported me to a marvelous world. Working full time for American Airlines, also, baking and decorating cakes part-time. Making sure the mortgage was met, and foods were at the table, separated me from the outer world. From friends that probably were in need of somebody willing to listen. Needing someone to cry with them or celebrate the birth of their children, or grand children. Wedding, divorces, christening, funerals, so many important moments lost forever.
Old friends should never be forgotten. Old friends should be celebrated, if only for the wonderful memories they have generated in the past.
Cake decorators, enjoy your passion, but please make some time for your friends and loved ones before is too late.
As I thought about my old hand held mixer, a wonderful verse of scriptures come to mind. “A man that hath friends, must show himself friendly, and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother” Proverbs 18:24
